Goal personal planning setting success – You Need to Give Yourself Enough Time For This…
Many people start out with ambitious plans, big exciting goals and inspiring visions. At first things go well, but soon they start to realise that they are going to have to put in many hours of hard work learning new skills. Discouraged, the temptation is to look for a way round the problem, but this just leads to fruitless dead ends and eventual loss of momentum. The next step is failure. If only…
One of the problems with many attempts at personal planning and goal setting is the culture of instant overnight success. Another area where people get mislead has been promoted by the film “The Secret”. The film correctly tells us that in order to succeed you have to focus your mind on your goals. However it fails to mention that just focussing your mind is usually not enough to enable you to reach your goals.
Practice Makes Perfect
If you are going to achieve ambitions stretch goals it is almost inevitable that you will need to learn to do new things, think new thoughts and adopt new behaviours.
Of course it is possible that like the people in the case studies on so many websites, you just happen to have the right combination of mental and physical abilities (usually as a result of years of development doing something else!) that you can easily pick up the new abilities that you need to learn. However, this happens very rarely. Putting aside extraordinary luck, it is more likely that you will need to practice your new skills.
Practice is something that is often associated with physical skills such as playing a musical instrument or mastering a sport. When you practice one of these physical skills what are you really doing? There are two things, one is improving your physique, but the second and far more important thing is to strengthen your mind. A study of concert pianists for example showed that two areas of their brain – the part that controls finger dexterity and the part that is responsible for hearing are many times larger than in a non-pianist.
This should give you a clue that you can use practice to develop any ability that you need to achieve your goals. For example you can practice just about any form of skill, new ways of using your muscles, new ways of using your mind, new ways of believing, new ways of looking at the world. Everything that you need to do can be learnt and programmed in to your brain.
So even if you feel you are faced with a seemingly insurmountable obstacle, you can overcome it with practice. The problem with practice is that it requires two things. You need to take action and you need to persist through numerous attempts until you final master the skill you need.
…but you don’t always need perfection
The good news is that you don’t always need to be an expert at everything you try in order to succeed. In fact it is more likely that you need to be a true master of just one or two things and ok at a lot more things to succeed. So you can focus your energies in just one or two areas in order to be successful.
Many people are looking for instant success and achieving goals. If they are extraordinarily lucky, it may just be possible, however it is more realistic to prepare to put in some significant time practicing and mastering new abilities such as skills, ways of thinking, ways of processing information before real success is achieved. So many instant overnight successes have been years in the making!
