Delegation is one of the key skills that you have to learn if you are to be successful in life. You can use delegation in just about any part of your life. You might think of delegation as just being part of the world of work where you get someone else, usually a subordinate to do work for you.

However, you probably already delegate some of your responsibilities in your family life. If you have children that are old enough, you probably get them to help you. If you are a member of a community organisation, you probably ask people to take on tasks from time to time.

Why is delegation important?

The first and foremost reason is that it is probably the single most efficient way to leverage your time. You have 24 hours in every day, just like everyone else. You can only achieve so much in those 24 hours. You can develop the skills to be very efficient in doing what you do, but you can never match the output of 2 even moderately skilled people.

The only way to achieve more than your natural capacity is to delegate.

As you become more skilled at delegating, you can manage more and more. Delegation can eventually mean that you can become the head of a multimillion dollar multinational with an enormous number of people deployed around the world to deliver the highly complex output of a typical global company.

Another reason for developing the skills needed to delegate is that it is a great personal growth opportunity. As you develop the skills to delegate you will learn how to teach other people to do the tasks you want to delegate, you will learn how to motivate them and to make sure that they continue to deliver to the highest quality standards. You will learn how to develop and maintain a two way trusting relationship.

As you become better at delegating tasks, you will find that you have more time that you can use to do other higher level tasks such as planning, developing relationships, finding new business and so on. In fact you can spend increasing amounts of time on the things that are important to the success of you and the people you are delegating to and less time on managing day to day urgent issues and crises.

The disadvantage of delegating is that you will have to move out of your current comfort zone. The first thing you will have to learn is to manage yourself better. You can’t manage other people until you manage yourself. You will have to develop the discipline to spend more time on the important issues such as developing relationships with the people you are delegating to rather than allowing yourself to become distracted by minor urgent issues. You will need to work hard at first and be patient as you teach people to do the tasks you are handing over.

However, if you make the effort to learn to delegate, you will be rewarded with the ability to achieve more and you will likely receive more rewards for the time you spend working. You will find that the ability to delegate is critical to success.
