What one thousand words does your picture say?
Ever heard the saying "A picture is worth one thousand words"? It talks of the power of images to convey large amount of information easily. But just what are you pictures conveying? If someone looked through your photo albums would they come up with words like "stunning", "beautiful", "moving", "emotional", or would it be more like "boring", "next", "what?", "ugly"? You control what words are conveyed by you pictures. Here are some tips to getting the right words across.
Tip 1: Fill your image with the subject.
When you take a picture you usually want the subject of that picture to stand out. The easiest way to do this is to make sure the subject takes up most of the image. For example if you're at a wedding and you want a picture of the happy couple, make sure you fill the frame with them, not with background. There are several ways to do this, like using the zoom on your camera, or simply moving closer towards them. If you've already taken pictures, where you can now see there's way too much background, use image editing software to crop the photo, so that the subject takes up most of the frame.
Tip 2: Use an interesting angle.
Most pictures are taken from the head height of a person. Obviously this is because you put the camera up to your face when you take the picture. But have you ever thought of bending your knees? Or standing on a chair or ladder? Using an unusual angle can make an ordinary shot extrodinary. This tip is great to use when you're photographing kids. It's stops you getting the tops of their heads all the time!
Tip 3: Find a good photography book
One of the best things you can do to improve your photography is find a good how-to book on the subject. Not a text-book, that goes into all the technical stuff, that'll just confuse you. What you want is a "dummies guide", that breaks it all down into bite size chunks, so you can digest them one at a time. The one I recommend is Digital Photography Secrets by David Peterson. It's a great resource because it's packed with ideas you can use right now to improve your photography.
Tip 4: Edit your albums
Don't put every photo you take in your albums! Do you think every painting Rembrandt did was a masterpiece? No way! You've got to learn how to choose the best images you've taken and only display those. In the music industry they call this "all killer, no filler"! You want every picture in your albums to be memorable, not something people passover. This leads into the final tip...
Tip 5: Take more photos
I can't stress this one enough! It's the single biggest thing you can do to improve your photography. The more photographs you take, the better understanding you will have of your camera and how to use it. Also if you've got 100 photos of something rather than one or two, it's much more likely that there's a good one amongst them. Having more photos to choose from also makes tip 4 easier. With a digital camera and a large memory stick, there's no excuse to stop photographing after one or two images, keep going til you run out of room!
Start using these tips today and I guarantee your images will be shouting the right one thousand words to the world!
